About the All About Jazz Platform
All About Jazz has been a pillar of the jazz community since 1995, championing the music as an art form and, more importantly, supporting the musicians who create it. Our enduring and unconditional commitment has made “AAJ" one of the most culturally important websites of its kind, read by hundreds of thousands of fans, musicians and industry figures every month. Renowned trumpeter Enrico Rava cited All About Jazz as “The Bible of Jazz” while London-based vocalist Sabrina Rabello referred to it as “The IMDb of Jazz.” Though AAJ is not IMDb, it shares more characteristics with the movie database than it does with industry print publications.
The All About Jazz experience varies depending on how users engage with the platform. Though there is overlap, what a reader, writer, editor, live music presenter, musician, educator, publicist or advertiser values depends on their needs. For an enthusiast, it is about entertainment and discovery, while for the professional, it is about leveraging All About Jazz’s promotional services and readership.
International in scope, All About Jazz is a highly decorated, trafficked, recognized, referenced, and respected brand of 27 years’ standing. The driving force for AAJ’s continued success rests on its evolving technology–its relational database in particular. It has allowed AAJ to create a robust, scalable and integrated platform to serve its community of 213,000 members and 300,000 monthly readers. Brilliantly conceived and highly structured, the platform is developed and maintained in-house and is powered by a MySQL database. The application uses PHP, Javascript and CSS. Web services include AWS, Digital Ocean, CloudFlare, GitHub, DISQUS and AddThis.
All About Jazz provides an authoritative perspective on jazz music and is recognized for its depth and breadth of coverage. Inclusive in nature, AAJ covers other idioms, most notably jazz adjacent music including blues and jam. Website content is created by volunteer writers, volunteer editors, and industry professionals.
As an active hub and community for jazz music and culture, AAJ publishes daily content in the form of articles, news announcements, musician pages, photos, events, business listings, free music, polls, giveaways, a weekly newsletter (with 82,000 subscribers) and more.
AAJ’s revenue is derived from advertising (e.g. Event Spotlight, newsletter sponsorship), professional services (e.g. Premium Musician Page, New Album Showcase), fund drive donations and merchandise sales.
Led by founder, Michael Ricci, All About Jazz's senior staff, and a team of technologists, AAJ continues to expand its offerings and develop new means to foster jazz discovery and global connectivity.
